Empowering Girls Program

Start Date: May 3 2026

Duration 2 hours, three time per week.

Introduction

In Indigenous teachings, the canoe is more than a vessel—it carries medicine for the body, mind, and spirit. The act of canoe pulling strengthens participants physically, grounds them culturally, and heals them emotionally. Because of these many benefits, anyone who wishes to take part should be welcomed, supported, and encouraged.

This program provides a culturally safe space where participants come together three times per week to experience the strength and healing of the canoe. Guided by Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and trained facilitators, participants will engage in paddling, storytelling, singing, and drumming. Each session is designed not only to build physical stamina and water safety skills, but also to nurture confidence, resilience, and belonging.

Project Description

The program integrates regular canoe pulling with cultural practices and workshops that address health, well-being, and life skills. Alongside paddling, participants will learn through storytelling circles, cultural teachings, singing, and drumming, reinforcing identity and creating collective strength. Workshops on nutrition, cultural safety, and mental readiness further support whole-person wellness.

The journey canoe has been chosen for its stability and accessibility, allowing people of all experience levels to participate. For those who wish to progress further, opportunities will be provided to train in traditional racing canoes. Regardless of pathway, the canoe becomes both a teacher and a vessel of healing—helping participants reclaim cultural practices, strengthen their voices, and thrive both on and off the water.

There are two streams for this program:

“Strong Hearts Canoe Circle” for Girls, Women and Two Spirit participants

“Currents of Belonging” is the inclusive program, open to all.
